TV’s Bad News Brigade

There are two key questions to be asked of ABC, CBS and NBC’s coverage of the war in Iraq: Are network reporters giving the public an inordinately gloomy portrait of the situation, as some critics charge, and are the positive accomplishments of American soldiers and Iraq’s new democratic leaders being lost in a news agenda dominated by assassinations, car bombings and casualty reports. The clear answer to both questions is a resounding yes. The Media Research Center has done an amazing study that illustrates how news about the war has grown increasingly negative, terrorist attacks are the centerpiece of TV’s war news, coverage of the Iraqi political process has been negative, few stories focused on the heroism or generous actions of American soldiers, and supposedly there is no “good news” to report.
