Hopefully the new superintendent will have integrity and not look at taxpayers money as “free money”.

Kettering government schools treasurer resigns

Steve Clark, who has been on paid administrative leave since May 6, resigned as treasurer of the Kettering School District on Monday night. Clark reached an agreement with the school board to resign while the board was conducting an executive session about his fate that lasted more than four hours. Under the agreement, reached in principle, Clark resigned effective Monday night, but will continue to receive his salary for 19 months. Clark is paid $125,000 annually.

“I feel we did everything we could in this situation,” said George Bayless, president of the school board.

What you could have done was to fire him months ago. Now, he will get approximately $197,916 of taxpayers money.

Kettering board removes district leaders from posts

The superintendent and the treasurer for Kettering City Schools have been relieved of their duties by the school board.

The board voted unanimously in a special session Tuesday morning to put Superintendent Jim Schoenlein and Treasurer Steve Clark on paid administrative leave, effectively immediately.

The cause for the action was not entirely clear. According to a district statement, the action was taken after the board did “an extensive review of a management situation, and issues impacting students are not involved in any way.”

“The board cannot provide the specific reasons for this action today, as further review is necessary,” according to the statement.

Open Ohio for Business: Reform the municipal income tax now

April 23, 2014 Leave a comment

In Ohio a married couple filing joint with two children makes on average $73,000. Their Ohio income tax for calendar year 2011 was $1,843.70. Their Ohio income tax for calendar year 2016 will be $1,487.51; this is a reduction of $356.19 or 19.3%.

As for the city income tax, in Kettering the income tax rate went from 1.75 percent to 2.25 percent on January 1st, 2007 (Section 191.03 A).

If you calculate the median income of $46,259 the tax owed would be $1,040.83. Prior to 2007 it would have been $809.53, this represents an annual increase of $231.30. Mayor Don Patterson was who advocated for the increase in taxes saying that he wanted Kettering to mirror Dayton.

The groups for which pay zero income tax is plentiful. Military pay or allowances isn’t taxed. The income of religious, fraternal, charitable, scientific, literary or educational institutions isn’t taxed; also, the personal earnings of all individuals under eighteen years of age.

If I were in charge, I would reverse the income tax increase back to 1.75% to help lessen the tax burden for the citizens of Kettering.

Lawsuit asks for stop to traffic cameras

March 25, 2014 Leave a comment

I’ve been against them from the beginning. I’ve spoken with officials in Kettering and in Dayton, and they both say that it causes more trouble than it’s worth. You can’t face your accuser for one. That alone should warrant these being taken down.

Top GOP lawmaker says state not ready for number of failing third graders

March 10, 2014 Leave a comment

As the time nears for statewide testing of Ohio third graders who are now required to be proficient in reading, one top Republican lawmaker has made a dire prediction.

“I’m not sure the state is prepared, I’m not sure our schools are prepared, but it’s going to happen,” said state senator Peggy Lehner, chair of the senate Education Committee. “It’s going to be a tough year.”

Starting this year, students who don’t pass the third grade reading proficiency test will be held back.

I find this news pure schadenfreude. Peggy Lehner went out of her way to change the metrics so that Kettering Government Schools would receive excellent scores when they would have been lower than expected. The only thing different in this situation is that she wasn’t in tears as she was on past legislation.

A Kettering School Board member has been charged with sexual imposition and disorderly conduct. James S. Trent, 80, was ordered into Kettering Municipal Court to face the charges stemming from a Sept. 13 incident.

Kettering Police Chief James M. O’Dell said in a news conference Friday afternoon that the incident happened in the woman’s home. According to police records, the 22-year-old woman told investigators that Trent grabbed her buttocks. Police issued Trent a citation on Sept. 18. Trent will be arraigned on Sept. 26.

Kettering City Schools named the basketball arena at Fairmont High School after Trent when it opened. Kettering City Schools Superintendent Jim Schoenlein told 2 NEWS he couldn’t comment on the case. “I have always known Jim Trent to be of impeccable character. He has been of great service to this school district for many years. Since this is a legal proceeding- it would be inappropriate for me to comment.”
